To quote the psychopath from “Nightcrawler,” “a friend is a gift you give yourself.” Well, okay, Robert Louis Stevenson said it first. But the point is that all sorts of people manage to make their lives a little rosier by maintaining healthy friendships. Not Billie and Gene, though. Their relationship’s weird as hell. And while it may work for them, in your own life, always remember: Be a Billie, not a Gene.
BILLIE PUTS HER FRIENDS FIRST
Billie drives Gene to a funeral, even though funerals frighten her. Follow her lead and step outside of your comfort zone to help your friends. Don’t be like Gene and wear a hat that says “FUNERAL” to a funeral; it’s so 2015.
BILLIE TRUSTS HER FRIENDS
Gene tells Billie that she completed an important task, but guess what? She didn’t. A friend’s trust is like Adrian Grenier taking a stand on climate change: so important. Be like Billie and nurture your friends. And go ahead and do it while insulting their clothes. You’ll feel better.
BILLIE BELIEVES IN HER FRIENDS
Billie thinks Gene can do better and pushes her to work hard. A good friend sees the best in their friend even when their best still isn’t all that good. Don’t be like Gene and play video games when you could be doing something productive, like screaming in a pillow.
BILLIE TAKES AN INTEREST IN HER FRIENDS’ HOBBIES
Gene spends the night partying hard and taking lots of drugs. Don’t do that. But at least Billie — oh, wow. She did the exact same thing as Gene. Hm. Well, shoot, there goes that advice. You know what? Just be like Chris Klein. Chris Klein assists those in need and also was good in “Election.” Go do that.
