Considering the winning coalition that Donald Trump managed to mobilize despite his well-documented history of self-contradictions and flat-out lies, it’s no wonder that the Oxford Dictionaries chose “post-truth” as 2016’s Word of the Year. And few waded as deep into the post-truth movement as The Daily Show’s own Jordan Klepper, who spent much of the campaign trying to untangle the feelings of Trump’s most die-hard supporters from the facts. Here we salute Jordan’s reporting — and marvel at the logical gymnastics that these Trump fans had to perform in order to arrive at their positions.

  • ON THE OBAMA LEGACY

Why didn’t Barack Obama do more to prevent the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001? Well, he didn’t get elected president until 2008, so it probably would have been pretty awkward if he had tried to hang out in the Oval Office before then.

  • ON GENDER EQUALITY

While there’s no record of war being declared due to a head of state having hot flashes, there is a record of Donald Trump writing incendiary tweets about America’s nuclear arsenal. If nuclear war does break out, though, at least menopause will have played no part.

  • ON FREEDOM OF RELIGION

It should go without saying that religious expression is a fundamental right in America, but that’s apparently not what this lady believes. At least she’s in good company with Trump’s new national security adviser, Michael Flynn, who’s also expressed some feelings of intolerance toward Muslims.

  • FINALLY, ON AMERICA’S ERA OF GREATNESS

Trump’s campaign slogan (“Make America Great Again”) raised the question of when, exactly, America was great. “Before women had the right to vote” is certainly one answer to that question. It’s not a good one, but at least he’s being honest. (Hey, we’ll take the silver linings where we can get ’em.)
