Cultural Appropriation: A Primer

If you’re not in the know, allow Problematic to fill you in.

Cultural appropriation: Perhaps you’ve seen the term in articles about Iggy Azalea or what white people wear to Coachella, and you’re wondering what it means.

Lucky for you, this week Moshe sat down with “Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris to discuss appropriation and how harmful it can be when white people “borrow” from minority cultures.
To hammer the point home, Moshe collaborated with hip-hop legend MC Serch (of 3rd Bass) on a hot track about the history of cultural plundering in America.
So think twice before you decide to wear a Native American headdress or braid your hair into cornrows — especially if you’re white. Do your due diligence. Research the historical significance of these fashions and talk to people within the cultures that created them.

Or, better yet, just don’t do it. The Instagram likes aren’t worth it.
