>> Trevor: OKAY, SO I BELIEVETHE STAFF HERE AT THE SHOW SAID

THAT YOU CAN TEACH ME SOMETHING.

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT-- I MEAN, ITHINK I'VE BEEN SHAKING HANDS

GREAT, BUT YOU BROUGHT A DOGTHAT'S OVER-- YOU'RE GOING TO

TEACH ME HOW TO.

>> I'M GOING TO TEACH YOU THEFUNDAMENTALS PETTING A DOG.

THAT'S ONE OF THE EPISODES, "HOWTO PET A DOG."

>> Trevor: THIS IS THESTRANGEST THING EVER.

I DON'T EVEN KNOW-- LIKE-- THISIS-- YOU HAVE A SHOW ABOUT THIS.

FIRST OF ALL--

>> SO ONE OF THE--

>> Trevor: WHAT KIND OF DOGIS THIS.

>> THIS IS A MIX PAPIER-MACHECHICKEN WIRE.

THIS IS NOT A REAL DOG.

I WANT TO EMPHASIZE.

I BUILT THIS DOG IN MY KITCHEN.

HIS NAME IS DINGO D.DIGLESWORTH.

AND ALREADY-- SO-- NO, DOGSACTUALLY DON'T LIKE TO BE PET ON

THE TOP OF THE HEAD, OKAY.

THERE ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS--I'M SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY ISN'T

THAT COMFORTABLE AROUND DOGS.

I HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE ONE WITHA ROTWIELLER.

AND THAT KIND OF PUT ME ONLYWHEN IT COMES TO THESE-- TO

THESE ANIMALS.

>> Trevor: YES.

>> DOGS.

AND SO I THOUGHT BEFORE I WOULDPRACTICE ON REAL DOGS IT WOULD

BE BETTER TO BUILD A--

( LAUGHTER )

>> Trevor: A PAPER-- THAT MAKESTOTAL SENSE, I UNDERSTAND.

PAPIER-MACHE FIRST.

THAT'S WHAT YOU DO.

>> THERE ARE A COUPLE OF THINGSYOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU

ENGAGE THE DOG PHYSICALLY ANDTHE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO

READ THE BODY LANGUAGE OF THEDOG.

>> Trevor: BUT IT'S NOTMOVING, SO--

>> RIGHT.

>> Trevor: IT'S DEAD.

SO THIS IS GOOD.

IS THIS GOOD?

>> IT'S GOOD BECAUSE THE DOG ISSTILL.

I WANT TO EMPHASIZE A COUPLETHINGS.

THERE'S A TAIL BACK HERE-- IT'SAN OLD SOCK I USED TO WEAR IN MY

SUNDAY SCHOOL DAYS.

A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK A WAGGINGTAIL INDICATES A HAPPY DOG.

IT DOESN'T.

IT INDICATES AN ALERT DOG.

IT DOESN'T NECESSARILY MEAN THEDOG WANTS TO BE PET WHEN THE

TAIL IS WAGGING.

EAR POSITION IT ALSO IMPORTANT.

IF THE EARS ARE FOLDED DOWN ORBACK IT MEANS THE DOG IS

STRESSFULFUL.

YOU WOULD THINK THIS DOG DOESN'TWANT TO BE PET BECAUSE IT'S

EXHIBITING WHAT ARE KNOWN ASWHALE EYES.

YOU CAN SEE THE WHITE OF THE EYEAROUND THE PUPIL, OKAY.

AGAIN, PLEASE DON'T PET THE TOPOF THE HEAD OF THE DOG

>> Trevor: I WASN'T TRYING TOPET.

I WAS TRYING TO COVER THE EYES.

>> NO, NO, NO, DOGS ALSO DON'TLIKE THAT.

>> Trevor: NO COVERING THEEYES.

>> DOGS DON'T LIKE TO BEBLINDED.

YOU WANT TO APPROACH THE DOGFROM THE SIDE.

GET DOWN ON THE DOG'S LEVEL.

YOU DON'T WANT TO LOOM OVER THEDOG -- POSITION YOUR HAND SO

THE DOG CAN INVESTIGATE USINGITS INCREDIBLE NOSE, BUT YOU

DON'T WANT TO JUST SHOVE YOURHAND UP INTO THE MUZZLE OF THE

DOG.

YOU REALLY LET THE DOG DICTATEOF THE TERMS OF THE INTERACTION

WHICH WAS FOR ME THE GREATINSIGHT THEY LEARNED MAKING THAT

EPISODE.

WE ARE NOT OBLIGATED TO ENGAGEEVERY DOG WE SEE.

READ THE DOG'S BODY LANGUAGE.

READ THE DOG'S POSITION.

READ THE DOG'S MOOD.

IF IT'S ALL BRO'D OUT LIKE THIS,YOU WANT TO STEP BACK LIKE YOU

WOULD WITH A REAL BRO.

>> Trevor: WHAT I DO WITH AREAL BRO, IS I PUT MY HAND NEXT

TO THEIR FACE AND THEY SMELL ISAND I KNOW WHETHER THEY WANT TO

ENGAGE WITH ME.

>> IF YOU'RE AFRAID OF DOGS,IMGAINE IT'S A HUGE BRO ON ST.

PATRICK'S DAY.

>> Trevor: HEY, WHAT'S UP, MAN?

APPROACH FROM THE SIDE AND MAYBEENGAGE HERE WITH-- YOU DON'T

WANT TO GO ON THE TOP OF HEAD.

>> Trevor: SO YOU-->> YEAH, AND THEN IF THE DOG

APPEARS LIKE IT'S HAVING A GOODTIME, IT'S ENJOYING--

>> Trevor: OH, IT'S HAVING AGOOD TIME!

IT'S HAVING A GOOD TIME!

AND HOW I DO END THIS?

>> YOU JUST DO IT UNTIL YOURHANDS FALL OFF, AND THEN THE

DOG-- YEAH, WHEN THE DOG IS NOLONGER INTERESTED OR THE DOG

WALKS AWAY OR THE DOG STARTSSCREAMING OR BLOGGING ABOUT YOU

IN A NEGATIVE WAY, THEN YOU'REDONE.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO MESS WITH THEDOG ANYMORE.

>> Trevor: YOU KNOW WHAT?

WHEN WE FIRST STARTED SPEAKING,I WASN'T SURE ABOUT YOU.

BUT I'VE LEARNED SO MUCH RIGHTNOW.

>> REALLY?

>> Trevor: THAT I'M GOING TOBUY THE BOOK.

>> THANK YOU.

( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )

THANK YOU.

>> Trevor: "GOING DEEP WITHDAVID REES" AIRS ON ESQUIRE

NETWORK WEDNESDAY NIGHTS AT10:00.
